Meet the Manager - The FPL Differential

1) What is your name?

The FPL Differential

2) How long have you been on Footstock, how did you hear about it and what is your Footstock related background?

I have been on the Football Index for a couple of years now, and through Football Index twitter I had heard many good things about FootStock - at the time a small start up company crowd-funding through Indiegogo. It really seemed to be picking up traction, and given I have a love for Fifa Ultimate Team in collecting various cards felt this was right up my alley, so decided to get involved - I have loved the product more and more with each passing gameweek!

3) What is your portfolio size?

I think it is difficult to say given I’m not totally aware of how much money I have tied up in players - I would guess in the region of £600. I tend to keep roughly a £300-400 bankroll exclusively for tournaments, after picking up some wins I find it difficult not to improve my portfolio and make some additions to enable me to enter more pro tournaments!

4) What is your portfolio structure?

It’s evenly spread across the board, given I’ve opened many packs over time based on the players I’ve pulled I’ve structured my portfolio around them - I think Liverpool is the one team where I don’t have the full set of elite level players (currently missing Salah and Mane, so don’t enter the pro tournaments for any Liverpool game) while Man City is the one team I’ve gone all out on ensuring I own pretty much every squad player.

The newly promoted teams, who due to a low level of supply remain relatively expensive given how infrequently they are the most likely winners of their games so I have avoided these also for the most part. I currently own 898 cards but should definitely have a clear out, I’ve been poor keeping on top of who I want to offload.

5) What is your strategy?

Tournaments have always been my main focus, but I think I should target trading more and keep an eye on how the market reacts and when. Should probably have a clear out of my portfolio at some point, for instance I think I own 7 Son’s for some reason due to packs!

6) What do you like about Footstock?

Rake free tournaments and rake free market without doubt are the biggest strengths of Footstock for me - there is no other competitor (that I’m aware of) that offers this. ROI’s on tournaments can be pretty small before having the operator take what is usually a hefty entry fee making them unsustainable.

I have no long term plan with footstock other than to keep using it, continue to enter tournaments and continue to study the scoring matrix, recognising what is and isn’t rewarded on a player by player basis. When I load up the scores on WhoScored the first tabs I look at are amount of successful dribbles and amount of saves each keeper has made!

7) Which players do you presently think are the best value and why?

From a trading point of view, given I haven’t studied the market closely I would struggle to give sound advice on this. However I do believe Goalkeepers offer great value - a 10 point clean sheet bonus is huge, so with great fixtures coming up I think Kasper Schmeichel could be great value, and based on the recent Lloris injury Gazzaniga should rocket up in price (35p at time of writing).

As for attackers dribbles seem to be rewarded highly - Wolves fixtures look to improve, and with Nuno seeming to mix things up moving to a 3 up front formation this makes space for Traore as a potential regular starter - he seems to complete more dribbles than anyone, even in his short cameo’s, so if he’s getting 60 minutes+ chipping in with the occasional goal and assist we could see him propel from a basic to a rare card in no time (41p at time of writing).

8) What advice would you give a new trader?

My biggest tip is that for a win a player is awarded 6 points, which in the scheme of things is a huge bonus - time after time I jump the rankings by a number of places once the game has finished due to putting together a team of players in a tournament who all play for the one side, even if a couple have been substituted. If you expect multiple goals then obviously having players from both teams make sense, but gambling on those 6 bonus points from all of your players can really benefit your success.

Also I would advise new managers not to enter the pro tournaments without what they would seem as a perfect starting 6 it's very easy to give in to temptation and enter tournaments with a team that isn't perfect, discipline really pays off in the long term.

9) What has been your best/favourite roulette win or swap?

I think early on I managed to win Harry Kane from Calvert-Lewin - also managed to pick up 4 Gabriel Jesus cards from when he was getting less playing time in the Premier League, always brings a smile to my face when I see he is in the starting lineup over Aguero.

10) What are you most looking forward to about Footstock?

The new rewards that have been recently added are great and recently fed my urge to open packs with some juicy discount offers! I feel the more people who try the product the more people will take to it, it’s a great alternative to fantasy premier league and once you build a portfolio if you are willing to keep it the game can accommodate you regardless of your bankroll - seeing this product grow as it rightly should throughout this seasons will be great, hopefully I can get a few more of my friends on board!
