Meet the Manager - John Nellis

Updated: Jan 24, 2020

1) What is your name?

John Nellis, Host of the High Wide and Handsome podcast.

2) How long have you been on Footstock, how did you hear about it and what is your Footstock related background?

I’m not actually sure, I think I signed up over summer but only really took an interest in early September. I heard of it through twitter, where I engage heavily about Football Index. I pretty much tick all the boxes of your stereotypical Footstock user I would imagine. I have played fantasy football for about 10 years, FIFA Ultimate Team for about 5, I have gambled with traditional bookies before but transitioned to FI at the start of the year, I’ve played poker and I’ve also traded crypto. Anywhere I see an opportunity to make good money and have fun at the same time, I am all over it.

3) What is your portfolio size?

I’m not too sure, I’m probably in the £250-500 bracket somewhere.

4) What is your portfolio structure?

I own one of most of the premium players, lots of lads under a quid and try to have a bit in the balance for tourneys. I hold multiple of very few players and it’s usually down to winning them in roulette. I find myself more likely to roulette off a player if I have multiple of him, and inevitably end up losing him, while picking up more singles in the process, if that makes sense. I initially bought a load of exciting midfielders and attackers, but as I’ve learned the platform a bit better, I now see the importance of premium defenders and GK’s when it comes to actually winning tournaments.

5) What is your strategy?

My strategy is to trust the growth of the platform when it comes to CA, and hopefully win a few tourneys and have some fun in the process. I’m not as hell bent on making money on here as I am on FI, maybe because its harder to track actual profit IMO. I’ll keep reinvesting winnings and see where I end up at the end of the season, and if I’m doing particularly well, I’ll consider dumping a load more capital in.

6) What do you like about Footstock?

I love the endorphins of match day, watching your entry move up and down the tournament standings. The suspense in the final minutes if you are in the money is amazing, and I love it when a player I have bought rises significantly in value. I also get a serious amount of joy in getting a player with an offer I never thought would be accepted.

7) Which players do you presently think are the best value and why?

I think Tammy has been undervalued for a while now, and if you can snatch him for under £6 you have a bargain.

Sticking with Chelsea, I feel if CHO get’s some more gametime, and has a few good gameweeks there is no reason he can’t hit a tenner.

Lastly, a bit of a more controversial pick would be Otamendi. He has shown he has a goal in him, Man City have a decent CS record compared to the rest of the league and there are injuries and suspensions at CB for city. I can see him doing well in the coming weeks.

8) What advice would you give a new trader?

Take the time and get the hang of the orders in the market, enter as many tourneys as you can, especially the free ones.

9) What has been your best/favourite roulette win or player swap?

Best win has to be when I got Mane with a Jamie Ward-Prowse, minutes after winning Firminho with a Tammy.

10) What are you most looking forward to about Footstock?

THE 10K FREE ROLL! What else could the answer be to this question? This is going to be huge for the platform!
